Addo Elephant Park Rest Camp

Experience the beauty and diversity of a South African National Park (SANPark) camp.

Deep within the shadows of the dense valley bushveld of the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape lies the Addo Elephant National Park and the Addo Elephant Park Rest Camp. Here, the evenings are punctuated by the strident howl of the black-backed jackal, and the francolin's call heralds each new dawn. Safe from relentless persecution in the past, the grey leviathans of the bush now roam in peace.

Addo Elephant Park Rest CampThe original Elephant section of the park was proclaimed in 1931, when only eleven elephants remained in the area - today this finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary to over 450 elephants, Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo. But the Addo story has only just begun. Plans to expand the 164 000 ha Addo National Elephant Park into a 360 000 ha mega-park are moving forward at an exciting pace. This expansion is transforming Addo into the ultimate tourism destination. Some of its unique features already include:

Unrivalled natural diversity, with five of South Africa's seven major vegetation zones (biomes).
The Big 7 (Elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, whales and great white sharks) in their natural habitat. Rich heritage of archaeological and historical sites. A wide variety of accommodation and activity options. In addition, plans include the proposed proclamation of a 120 000 ha (296 500 acre) marine reserve that includes islands that are home to the world's largest breeding populations of Cape gannets and second largest breeding population of African penguins.

The following facilities are available at the main rest camp:

A fuel station selling petrol and diesel is available between 07:00 and 17:00.

A shop selling curios, snacks and basic supplies is open between 08:00 and 18:00 (Please note: times vary according to season, please check with park staff).

An al-la-carte restaurant is available in the main camp and is open for all meals from 07:00 to 22:00. Bookings are advisable, especially for dinner. Telephone: +27 (0)42 233 1220.

Accommodation IN the Addo Elephant National Park

If you like the idea of mingling with hephalumps then look no further!

Pack your bags and head for this haven to a herd of 450 elephants in the Sundays River region. Watch their little ones getting up to mischief in the mud at waterholes. These elephants are mellow, having been protected for more than 75 years and form one of the densest elephant populations around the globe. From your vehicle you can easily gaze into their big brown eyes and be amazed at the dexterity of its trunk endowed with 100 000 muscles.

Black rhino and Cape buffalo also browse in the dense valley bushveld. At night the pachyderms come out to play at the waterhole right near the chalets. They can be particularly entertaining with lots of stomping, snorting, scent marking and dust swirling.

The park has recently been extended and now encompasses the southern hemisphere’s largest expanding dune field, the Alexandria Forest and the world’s largest gannet breeding colony on Bird Island and numerous breeding penguins on St Croix Island.

It’s biggest brag? It hosts the Big Seven! That includes the Big Five with the great white shark and southern right whale thrown in – not that you can spot them from your car!

Besides these leviathans, keep your eyes open for the charming little meerkats or the unique flightless dung beetle.
